A better rationale for why presidential candidates should release tax returns

Here is how to connect Hillary’s emails (her big weakness) with Donald Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns (one of his many big weaknesses):

You don’t run for President unless you are willing to sacrifice your privacy. That is because the Presidency is important, and the people of the United States have the right to know more about the person who may lead their country than they have for a private citizen.

I made a mistake about trying to keep my private life private when I was Secretary of State. That was a small mistake.  But you notice I have released all of my private tax returns. All of the tax returns of the Clinton Foundation are public. If I had not released those returns, people might wonder if I had personally profited from my public service. Looking at my returns, anybody can see that this is not the case.

Donald Trump should make his private tax returns public also. That he has not done so should be very troubling to the American people. If he did not want to release his returns, he should not have run for the office of President of the United States of America. In fact, if during the nomination process, he had said that he refused to release them, he might not have received the nomination at all, because that is a huge red flag. If he could release his returns to the New Jersey Gaming Commission to get a casino license, he should be willing to release them to the American people.

Saying he can’t release them because he’s under audit is like saying he can’t release them because he signed them with the wrong color pen. Saying he can’t release them because his attorneys have advised against it is equally silly. Attorney’s will advise you to take the fifth if you’re asked to admit you had a glass of water. He signed them under penalty of perjury, and the only reason for him to not release them is if he’s ashamed of the truth or if he lied under oath.
