The best argument we have for the 2018 midterms is that we need divided government

The best argument in favor of divided government is that without divided government, the party in control is free to run roughshod over norms, institutions, and rules.

Every nomination that Republicans make without a quorum, every Supreme Court nomination that Republicans steal, every civil servant who is fired because he or she refuses to go along with an illegal order reinforces the importance of the importance of the check in a system that relies on checks and balances.

So let them nuke the filibuster. The sooner they do it, the better. If they really wanted to play ball, the Supreme Court nominee would have been Merrick Garland.

Let them change the rules.

If they tell Democrats we can’t vote “Hell, No,” vote “Hell, No,” anyway.

Breaking the rules is energizing. Breaking the rules will give us our spirit. Breaking the rules scares the opposition.

What has been the most encouraging day so far since the January 20 inauguration? It was the January 21 protest. Because we got to see how many we are, we got to hear what we have to say, we participated, and we gave each other courage.

Disobedience is what we have left.

We need to make them fear us. There are more of us than there are of them.
